RIP Manny’s: A big piece of NYC music history was just cleared for demolition

Fast Company Story

This has been coming for a while now, I guess since 2009. I’m not gonna lie and say that I’ll miss Manny’s of the last 15 years, it goes back way further than that for me. Somewhere around 1980 was my first experience of 48th St. in NYC. It used to be called “music row” or just 48th street by musicians. We didn’t even mention what blocks it was between because, for us, it was just something you knew.

It was magic, it was intimidating and it was high energy. The perfect storm of an industry that was having a moment- Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, jazz, blues, the Beatles were still somewhat recent…it was indescribable and also we’ll never have a physical experience even close to it ever again.
